Salvaging Water Damaged Wooden Furniture

Salvaging Water Damaged Wooden Furniture

Water damage can be very destructive such that it can destroy a house or a building and everything inside it. Such is very true, especially for wooden furniture that needs to be treated as soon as it gets inundated by floodwaters. This is because the more it is submerged and untreated, the bigger the damage it sustains.

The Texas A & M University, Agrilife Extension published a guide on how to deal with flood-soaked wooden furniture, among other home items that have been submerged in flooding. They came up with three easy-to-remember pointers for homeowners.

“Brush off mud. All parts (drawers, doors, etc.) should be removed. Remove or cut a hole in the back to push out stuck drawers and doors. Discard flooded padding. Use commercial furniture-cleaning products designed for the type of material. Do not refinish or wax until thoroughly dry.    Dry slowly out of direct sunlight because sun will warp furniture. It may take several weeks to several months to dry.”

The Spruce meanwhile came up with their share of tips on dealing with flooded furniture, and how to try to save them. Their tips at least put owners of wooden furniture at ease as they mentioned that there is a high chance of it getting recovered if it is removed from the floodwaters as soon as possible.

“Wood furniture may fare better after a flood, especially if it hasn’t been sitting in water for too long. Although furniture made from manufactured products such as plywood or MDF are probably total losses, it is usually possible to restore solid wood furniture unless it has suffered severe damage. Your solid wood furniture will need to be cleaned and dried at the very least. If it has been exposed to water for a long period, the joints or veneers may have to be re-glued.”

Wood and flooding

Good Housekeeping meanwhile published an article on the best way to deal with flooding and the havoc it brings. One of their tips focused on water damaged furniture.

“Take solid wood furniture outdoors, and remove drawers and doors to clean it (swollen parts may need to dry first, if they can’t easily be removed). Thoroughly brush or wash dirty furniture with a well-wrung cloth dipped in a mild soap and water solution. Use a cloth wrung in clear water to rinse. Allow the pieces to dry out of direct sunlight.”
